As Mardi Gras rolls into Sydney, the 365 docobites kids spend a little longer in Tel Aviv where they discover from Shai that gay pride is common within this city of remarkable contrasts…
How often do you feel comfortable enough to completely be yourself? To not hide away any of your secrets or to transform into the “type” of person others expect you to be. How often do you feel comfortable enough to avoid the temptation to blend into the group of “accepted” people, who don’t challenge the norm in any of your most “flawed” and “inconvenient” of ways.
Well, this week’s story comes from Shai, a “true Telavivine,” who speaks to us about the liberality of Tel Aviv as The Middle East’s gay capital. He told us that 25 percent of Tel Aviv is LGBT, that their “Gay Pride” is one of the biggest events of its kind in the world, and that it is here that not only himself, but many of those that come to visit, finally feel as though they can be exactly who they are, shamelessly.
Tel Aviv is a city full of opposites – people with conflicting views on religion, food and life – all of these folk living as neighbours. Of course there is conflict, which is what we mostly hear about, but for the most part these people live in peace with each other.
When we compared our own society’s tolerance and acceptance levels with what we were being told by Shai about Tel Aviv, we found it devastatingly low in comparison. As we listened to Shai talk about his “very traditional Jewish wedding” to his husband where, “there was a Rabbi and both mamas crying,” the idea of living freely, being comfortable in one’s own skin, was really put into perspective.
It is part of our nature as humans to fight for our freedom, and as we continue on this upward battle let us be inspired by stories such as Shai’s. He has not yet reached his complete goal of equality…after all, his marriage is not yet recognised by his state, however he has made progress and this “means a lot to me,” and to all who are fighting for the right to be exactly who we are.

About 365 docobites…
The 365 docobites team, Epiphany and Carl, are travelling across five continents for an entire year to introduce the 365 docobites community to a “stranger a day” via a vlog of short and shorter documentaries.
Each docobite will be as unique as the stranger it features, allowing their identity to drive the content. Whether we’re with a stranger for a moment or a day, 365 docobites will capture the essence of that time in their life; humorous or horrific, dramatic or delightful.
What do these people look like?
What do they think about?
What makes them laugh, cry, scream and shout?
What is life like for the strangers of the world?
