Hack4Homelessness is an event which looks to solve the social, technical and practical challenges of homelessness in this country. And they want your brain, too!

Homelessness in NSW is a complex issue, one where all the current solutions seem untenable. At each turn, newspaper headline and evening our at-risk youth spend on the cold corners of our cities, the more the questions flow. The only thing we can seemingly agree on is that the current system doesn’t work, but a tangible answer is seemingly harder to approach. A recent example of this was the response to Clover Moore’s removal of the kitchen and safe space that shielded the rough sleepers of Martin Place. Removal, of course, is not housing, so what to stop the same thing from happening elsewhere? Where do the most at risk go?

One innovative event is taking the decision-making away from the wringing hands of bureaucracy, throwing it open to the most forward-thinking minds outside the system.

Yours.

The Vibewire #Hack4Homelessness event sets participants a challenge, encompassing the many nuanced facets of the issue. Problems such as Accommodation, in where to find and maintain housing; how to ensure an ease of access to services needed to salve trauma, mental health and drug and alcohol addiction; access to medical, legal and accounting functions; and how to build a framework for education and suitable employment.

The figures in our state are galling. NSW has the highest rates of homelessness in the country. A third of homeless resulting from domestic violence and relationship issues, a third resulting from accommodation issues and 22% resulting from financial difficulties.

Alongside your own mind will be experts in the field, people with the shared or lived experience of homelessness, and local and international leaders, all searching for a definitive answer to the question of homelessness.

A more noble undertaking there could not be, as the figures in our state are galling. NSW has the highest rates of homelessness in the country. A third of homeless resulting from domestic violence and relationship issues, a third resulting from accommodation issues and 22% resulting from financial difficulties. Young people are disproportionately represented in these figures, and they are the central focus of the event, ensuring that the next generation of homeless doesn’t have to be.
