What Next Now: Viona Young on how to set yourself up after a divorce

In the next episode of the What Next Now podcast, Viona Young explains how you can reinvent your career while successfully co-parenting.

With a focus on women in the workforce, the new podcast What Next Now continues with its latest episode featuring an in-depth conversation with Viona Young, a self-starter who found a way to reinvent her career after a divorce.

Hosts Elissa Dowler and Tam Henry spoke to Viona about how she changed the way she approached her working life, not being chained to the idea of working set hours in an office, rather offering her services as an ‘end product’, rather than in billable hours.

To Viona, it’s simply a case of flipping the script on her kind of service delivery. She tells her clients, “You’re not buying my time, you’re buying my advice.”

A freelance consultant who has previously worked for Woolworths and Dan Murphy’s, Viona found herself in a potentially tough scenario after leaving the corporation, with a new baby and a marriage coming to its end.

Her vision was to restructure how she works so that her co-parenting process with her ex-husband put their young son at the centre of their lives.

The podcast delved into her life on the home front, and the challenges inherent in establishing a co-parenting dynamic. They discussed emotions, the idea of hate, and how you can navigate through some of life’s more challenging – often terrible – paths.

“A freelancing gig is exactly what you need,” she said, “because you can be in a constant state of build and pass it on to be maintained by the company (you’re working for).”

Her approach to freelancing is opposite to what many consultants do, which is to make themselves indispensable, thus requiring the company to continually call on them.

“My aim when I go in to do a project is to not make them reliant on me.

“I work with someone internally and tell them all the tools and knowledge they need to manage it themselves in the future.”

The conversation also touched on navigating the dating world after a separation; something which Viona found difficult so soon after the end of her marriage.

“There is no ‘perfect’,” she said, reflecting on the time. The episode also spoke to Viona’s ex-husband Ben, who gave his perspective on the process, and the steps he took to navigate the often-tricky path that men are faced with after a marriage ends.
